Hello,
This week we will have three big projects going on. First will be the district writing assessment which is completed in class over three days.
The second project is the Elementary Law Program. Working with local attorney, Sara Clarenbach, the class will prepare a play to perform at the County Court House in Santa Cruz. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, March 11. This is an outstanding program for the children to see the jury system in action. This week we will read and cast the play. Prior to our courtroom presentation, Ms. Clarenbach will visit to give the students an overview of what to expect when they are in the acutual court.
Also this week, we will begin a research project titled, "The Presidents of the United States". This is the only research project for the year and is due March 6th, giving the students almost 5 weeks to complete all of the required sections. Class time will will be devoted to learning how to do research, note taking, writing a bibliography, etc., but actual writing will be done at home. On Friday, students need to come prepared with the names of three presidents they would like to reserch for their report. They will definitely be assigned one of their choices.
This week:
* Please check out the flyer for the Valentine's Breakfast. In addition to sending in $5.00, PLEASE return the bottom of the flyer. The room moms need lots of help! I promise you'll have a great time!
* The science projects are due this Thursday.
* News Teams 3 and 4 will report the news on Friday. Hooray for a 5 day week!
* Join me in congratulating Marcus and Scott. They are our classroom spelling champs and will respresent our class in the school spelling bee.

Week of January 22-25, 2008
Hello,
There are two important papers in your envelope this week. First is the permission slip for the three Family Life Education classes. Yes, it's that time of year! If you have any questions, the school nurse is holding an information night to review the curriculum on January 30, at 6pm in the Rio MPR.
It's also time to order the school yearbook for 2007-2008. All the information is on the flyer. This presale runs from January 22-February 22. There are always a few that be purchased when they arrive, but ordering now will insure your student gets a yearbook.
Other important info:
We have some classroom needs. Can you help supply the class with boxes of tissues? I couldn't find a box after searching the room. And, Pete needs some small wrapped candies. I've had lots of reasons for students to get a treat and Pete is EMPTY!!! Thanks in advance!
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, the class is working on a special booklet for each classmate. This is a keeper...look for it to come home on February 14. Also, the room mothers from all three fifth grade classes are meeting to plan the annual 5th Grade Valentine's Breakfast. This is a fun and nutritious way to celebrate with 5th grade friends. There will be a flyer with all the details in next week's folder. Once the plans are set, I know they will need lots of help. By the way, the children love this day and the parents and teachers have a fun time too!
