We still have a lot going on so let me tell you about these ending days of 5th grade.

1. Monday we will tie dye our T shirts.
2. Wednesday is NOT a restructured day. We've enjoyed playing baseball these past weeks and
this week we're playing Mrs. Koue's class. Come by for all the action if you can.
3. Details for the Boardwalk trip on Thursday went home last week. Remember students need
to be picked up at 3:00 after checking out in the office.
4. Dismissal on Friday is at 10:50. Report cards will go home on Friday.
5. I still have a few deposit checks for the social studies CD-ROM.

CAN YOU HELP?? Traditionally, the fifth grade parents and children set-up the refreshments for the sixth grade promotion ceremony. Sixth grade parents provide everything and we just get everything ready. This way 6th grade families can be in the MPR enjoying the celebration, as you will be next year. Please let me know if you and your child can help on Wednesday evening for about an hour. I'll confirm the time with you, but it's usually around 4:00.

This week we will be putting the finishing touches on your very special memory book. These handmade books show lots of love and care, as welll as quality sewing and writing. The pictures bring back wonderful memories of the many activities, projects, and fun days of fifth grade. My, have they grown since the first day of school way back in August!

I'd like to take this opportunity to say thank you for supporting your children with encouragement to grow in so many ways this year. They managed homework, preparing for tests, creating projects, giving oral reports, taking on leadership roles and so much more while continuing with sports, hobbies, music lessons and most of all family activities. They did it all!! I say congratulations to you and your children.

I have appreciated the confidence and trust you have had in me to guide and educate your children. My goal this year, as always, was to inspire your child to have a passion for learning, especially READING! I wanted to include the beauty of the arts in a classroom environment that welcomed questions, valued students' creations, provided opportunity to let their imaginations soar, built confidence, and encouraged students to reach higher each day for academic success.

Here it is my last letter to you. Here are my ending days of being a classroom teacher. This is definitely a career I've LOVED and will miss. I hope to see you at school this week and around town in the future. Drop me a note from time to time. I 'd love hearing from you.

Best regards,
Melanie Jaynes

Week of May 27-30, 2008

Hello,

It was wonderful seeing everyone at Open House. Students not going can also tie dye a shirt.

The students love making their shirt, wearing their shirt, and it makes it easier for teachers and parents to identify our children at the Boardwalk. Language is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday and the first part of math on Friday. Next week, the second part of math is Tuesday and science is Wednesday and Thursday.

Students will have a light fruit/protein snack in class before testing begins. Thanks Mrs. Nigh and parents for making this happen. The kids love it and hate to see testing end. It just helps them relax and feel good. Of course they should eat breakfast before coming to school and get a good night's sleep!! This will be a light homework week, but also a very good time to read nightly and start thinking about the final book report.

This week in Room 10:
1. Please complete and return the permission slip for our end-of-the year trip to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

2. Students have the details for the "How To" book report. There are a few things they can't make (they have that short list), but there are lots of books in the public library. with great ideas. They will need to show the book when they give their class presentation. The due date is May 15 for the projects and presentation dates will be the following week.

3. After testing in May we will be making a special project that requires each student to bring in fabric and $5 to cover supplies. Students need EITHER a pre-cut piece of fabric called a "Fat Quarter" or a 1/2 yard of cotton or cotton blend. Beverly's is a good place to get either.

4. The classroom needs tissues and Pete needs some candies. Thanks!

Homework: Read nightly, study science vocab, review all 5o states and capitals for the "big" geography test after testing.

Monday:
Grammar - pages 80/81
Math - pages 8-5/8-6, even only

Tuesday:
Grammar - pages 135/137
Math - 8-7/8-8, even only

Wednesday:
Math - pages 8-11/8-12, even only

Thursday:
Math - 11-9/11-10. even only
Read Aloud

This week we will continue with a few more art projects/lessons. Students are having a great time creating some amazing pictures. They will definitely be on display at Open House.

Best regards,
Melanie Jaynes

Week of April 14-18, 2008

Hello,
This week begins the final reading theme. Everyone was prepared to present the case and anxious to hear the verdict. I congratulate the class for a job well done. Last Friday Sara Clarenback come to the classroom to tie up lose ends and answer questions. This week students will get the details for the next book report and have an opportunity to go to the school library to select a book. The genre is science fiction/fantasy. The due date for this book report is April 18.

3. No new spelling or grammar this week. Literacy will center around the the book we will begin to read. My Brother Sam is Dead is an above grade level book that fits perfectly with social studies. The plot will generate questions to be discussed in class. Vocabulary and comprehension questions will be completed for homework.

4. President presentations continue on Monday and Tuesday.

5. Monday and Tuesday we will review the study guide for the Chapter 7 social studies test on Wednesday.

6. Wednesday we'll see the 1st grade play. This is always a class favorite. They remember when.....

7. We will be writing thank you notes to Judge Salazar.

8. Please sign and return the report card envelope.

Homework: Nightly reading for 30 minutes, study for social studies test.

Monday:
Math - Review, tests 1 and 3 B
Reading - Comprehension questions and vocabulary, chapter 1

Tuesday:
Math - Review, tests 5 and 7 B
Reading - Comprehension questions and vocabulary, chapter 2
Social studies - Study for Chapter 7 test

Wednesday:
Math - Review, tests 9 and 11 B
Reading - Comprehension questions and vocabulary, chapter 3

Thursday:
Math - Review, tests 13 and 15 B
Reading - Comprehension questions and vocabulary, chapter 4

Friday begins the Spring recess. Enjoy the holiday and the time for "R and R". Hopefully, all those nasty colds and other assorted bugs that have hung around all too long will be gone when school resumes on March 31!!! Just a reminder and hint, students should be reading during the vacation!! Many students have a third trimester goal to " pump up" those AR POINTS, not to mention the joy of reading when the nights are not filled with homework.

Best regards,
Melanie Jaynes

WEEK OF MARCH 10-14, 2008

Hello,

Today begins the final trimester of the school year. What you might have heard from your child is true. There will be NO WRITTEN HOMEWORK. It's a perfect week for students to work nightly on their research project and just read for enjoyment. Maybe also a fourth "R" for some relaxation!

All week I'll be reviewing math concepts in class. We'll continue reading Bridge to Terabithia (working with the vocabulary from the book), the Elementary Law Play, getting ready for the next book report, and learning research skills for the big project.

FYI:
1. The second Family Life class on Tuesday is coed and about pregnancy and birth.

2. Don't forget the Valentine's Breakfast on Thursday and card exchange after lunch. Everyone is welcome to stop by and enjoy this day that the children just LOVE! It's also Rio Spirit Day, so wear your pink, purple, and red!!!

3. If you are driving to the NWS in Monterey on Friday, please be in the room by 8:45 as we'll be leaving at 9:00. REMEMBER TO BRING A LUNCH. Looks like the weather is going to be terrific and we'll be eating lunch at Dennis the Menace Park. I'll have a folder with driving directions for each of you.

4. NO SCHOOL next Monday, February 18, 2008.

Room 10 has been hit very hard with all the bugs going around. The sunshine couldn't have come at a better time. Hope you're all well and enjoying these long weekends.

Best regards,
Melanie Jaynes

Week of February 4-8, 2008

Hello,
With two school holidays honoring past presidents this month and a presidential election in the news on a daily basis, interest is high as we begin the research project, "The President's of the United States". First is the permission slip for the three Family Life Education classes. Yes, it's that time of year! If you have any questions, the school nurse is holding an information night to review the curriculum on January 30, at 6pm in the Rio MPR.

It's also time to order the school yearbook for 2007-2008. All the information is on the flyer. This presale runs from January 22-February 22. There are always a few that be purchased when they arrive, but ordering now will insure your student gets a yearbook.

Other important info:

We have some classroom needs. Can you help supply the class with boxes of tissues? I couldn't find a box after searching the room. And, Pete needs some small wrapped candies. I've had lots of reasons for students to get a treat and Pete is EMPTY!!! Thanks in advance!

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, the class is working on a special booklet for each classmate. This is a keeper...look for it to come home on February 14. Also, the room mothers from all three fifth grade classes are meeting to plan the annual 5th Grade Valentine's Breakfast. This is a fun and nutritious way to celebrate with 5th grade friends. There will be a flyer with all the details in next week's folder. Once the plans are set, I know they will need lots of help. By the way, the children love this day and the parents and teachers have a fun time too!

Homework: Remember to read nightly for 30 minutes.
Tuesday:
Math - lessons 86/87, even only
Spelling - Pages 223/224
Grammar - pages 52/53
Social Studies - packet, pages 47/48, five game questions and answers

Wednesday:
Math - lessons 88/89, even only
Spelling: pages 225/226
Grammar: pages 90/91
Social Studies: packet, pages 49/50, five game questions and answers

Thursday:
Math - lesson 90, all
Study for spelling test
Read Aloud
Social studies - packet, pages 51, 52, 53

Dates to Remember:
* Science projects due on January 31.
* Book reviews: February 5-8
* Sign of the Beaver cabin due February 12.

Best regards,
Melanie Jaynes

Week of January 15-18, 2008

Hello,

Happy New Year to everyone and welcome back.

What's happening this week in Room 10:
This week we will finish reading Sign of the Beaver and watch the video of the book to compare the story elements, with emphasis on the development of the characters.

Also this week I will be going over the next book report, "Everyone's A Critic". The children were prepared, enthusiastic, and eager to be next to take center stage. It was a day of fun, while developing love for poetry, feel comfortable speaking before a group, and make a fifth grade memory. It was wonderful seeing many parents enjoy this activity too.

Last week I sent home a packet of science projects. These are easy projects to do over the holiday break, but remember they aren't due until January 31 if you are away or just need a break from school!

What's happening this week in Room 10:
* Tuesday we're going to the library. Students will select books to read over the break (just a subtle hint), and get ready for the next book report which is February 8. More details after the break.

* We'll be reading historical plays this week. This is always a favorite activity for everyone. We're also reading and enjoying the Sign of the Beaver.

* Our social studies museums will be finished by Wednesday. Come by to visit if you get a chance. With lots of effort, the finished pieces are very impressive!

* The final test for '07 will be Thursday. We'll review Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and the THEME 3 READING ASSESSMENT will be Thursday.

* Wednesday we're going to the Jr. High to see a play.

* Wednesday is NOT restructured.

* Remember, you don't have to pack a lunch on Friday. Please join the Fiesta. We always have plenty of food and fun. Lunch is at 11:45 and the optional WHITE ELEPHANT exchange is at 1:00.

HOMEWORK: Read historical plays nightly and review for reading assessment on Thursday.
Monday:
Math - lesson 22, review, page 640

Tuesday:
Math - lesson 33, review, page 642

Wednesday:
Math - lesson 43, review, pages 644/645

Thursday:
Math - lesson 52, review, even only, pages 647/648

And now it's time to wish you all the goodness and happiness that comes with the holidays. I love all the sights and sounds....and the vacation! Hope your holidays are spent with good friends and family, and that the New Year brings much love and happiness to everyone.

Best regards to all and to all a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Melanie Jaynes

Week of December 10-14, 2007

Dear Parents,

We're having a Mexican Fiesta for our end of the year party on December 21, followed by a White Elephant Exchange. Our Room Moms are organizing the party, but I'm sure they would like a little help with the preparation and serving. And of course, it wouldn't be a celebration without you. Please come to the fiesta, and join us for lunch as we say good-by to 2007 and make a few resolutions.

I'm asking each child to bring in $5.00 to cover the cost of the party. The students are planning the menu this week, but there is always room for any holiday treat you'd like to make for the party.

As for the White Elephant, it's something you have, but don't want, it's old, but not worn out, it's funny or ugly, but charming, it has all its parts, and needs a new good home. The gift exchange is optional. Everyone who brings in a wrapped White Elephant will get a gift in the exchange.

This week I'm giving out a packet of science projects that go with our next unit of study, how atmospheric conditions are measured. Students are required to make any two projects and include a short write-up about the projects they make. They are due January 31, two weeks after we return from the winter vacation. If you are home and looking for something to do over the break, these projects can be easily completed in an afternoon. If you are away, the due date gives everyone enough time to complete both projects when school resumes in January.

Just a few more things:
* No News Teams this week.

* Congratulations to Lauren Reade and Dante Gomez. The class voted to have them represent our class on the Rio Leadership Team. Congratulations to all the students who wrote speeches. The voting results were very close and everyone was very qualified.

* Join us at the Poetry Cafe on Thursday at 10:20. You'll be in for a treat!

* Any one have a table lamp I can borrow for the Poetry Cafe??

* Remember to send back permission slip and $1.00 for the play at the Jr High.

Homework: Read nightly for 3o minutes.

Monday
Social studies - the remaining two pieces for the museum are due on Friday
Math - lesson 81, all
Spelling - Contract OR pages 180/181
Poetry - Be prepared with two poems to recite on Thursday

Tuesday
Math - lessons 82 and 83, even only
Spelling - Contract OR pages 182/183
Grammar - pages 40/43

Wednesday
Math - lesson 84, all
Grammar - pages 69/73
Practice poems!!!

Thursday
Math - lesson 85
DLP
Read Aloud - your choice

Stay warm, dry, and healthy during these busy days.

Best regards for a great week,

Melanie Jaynes

Week of December 3-7, 2007

Hello,

Last week we had an exceptional day of learning "outside" of the classroom. Over and over I heard the children rave about their day at NASA. Their thank you notes to the docents are filled with new information learned at NASA and sincere gratitude. The morning traffic is challenging, but parents who attended will agree, it's worth the effort!

HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ROOM 10 THIS WEEK:
* We'll continue reading Sign of the Beaver over the next two weeks. No new grammar or spelling from our reading series this week. We'll work with the new vocabulary from the book in class.

* Working in groups, students are making a Museum of Colonization in North America in social studies. They will have time in class each day, but also need to work on this at home nightly. Each student is responsible for three items: a written piece, an object, and a piece of their choice. This project will take us through the month of December.

* News Teams 3 and 4 will report the news on Friday.

* Please complete and return the permission slip with $1.00. We're going to the Jr. High to see Beauty and the Beast on Dec.19.

* The date for the science test has been changed. I hope your Thanksgiving holiday was festive and memorable.

WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEK:

1. Tuesday is our field trip to NASA. EVERYONE needs to bring a sack lunch. We'll be leaving school as soon as I take attendance. Parents, if you are driving, remember to bring your license. I'll have directions, etc. for you on Tuesday.

2. News Teams 1 and 2 will present the news on Friday.

3. Leadership speeches are due on Friday. Election results will be 12/7.

4. This week students will begin to select the 2 poems they will memorize and recite at the Poetry Cafe on Dec. 13. All students need to bring in a cup and saucer or a plate and mug to make the cafe a little more authentic. Also, our room moms will be calling for donations of cookies and large cans or hot chocolate mix. Let them know if you can help.

5. We'll begin reading Sign of the Beaver. With great test scores on the theme test, I say "job well done" to the hard working students in room 10! Thanks to the Gearing family for getting the pizza, hot and delicious, from their restaurant in Gilroy.

This week students will present the diorama they created for their historical book report. There was quite a buzz in the room as students brought in their projects last week. Everyone has been assigned a date. I look forward to seeing all that creativity and hearing about their books.

Our next book report is always everyone's favorite. You'll hear some great poems and enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. More about this when we return from Thanksgiving.

THIS WEEK:
1.
